Notes from Makeup January Roundtable — January 21, 2010 —  First United Methodist Church Twelve people and seven troops represented.   The primary topic for discussion was the Winter Camporee. It was decided:                                                                              Theme: Orienteering

Place: Austin Property

Dates: Feb. 26-28

There will be three major programs for scouts based on scout rank:

1. For younger scouts: Activities leading to Tenderfoot thru 2nd Class rank requirements

  • Coordinator: Mark Rogers (need volunteer to assist Mark with activities)

2. For Scouts working on 1st Class: Orienteering and related activities leading to 1st Class

  • Coordinators: Greg Burgess and Debbie Hannah

3. For 1st Class scouts and above: A weekend Orienteering/Backpacking style program

  • Coordinator: Troop 156 Leadership

Steve Isbell has plans/materials from the district orienteering program run at Austin a few years ago. He will be working with the coordinators but will be out of town on the orienteering weekend.

A leaders’ workday to set up and run through the orienteering programs is scheduled for February 20th. Leaders will meet at 8:00 AM at the Bean Pot Restaurant in Crossville and caravan out to the Austin Property.

Steve Isbell will coordinate clearing the date of the camporee with TTU ROTC, Biology, and the family that lives in the house on the property. Troop 156 has access to the property.

Dan Fenlon has volunteered to design the Patch for the Camporee.

Scoutmasters are requested to poll their troops prior to the next Roundtable (Feb 4) and estimate the number of scouts attending broken down by rank. The numbers are needed to plan the three major areas above.

A number of ideas were considered and the discussions will continue at the Boy Scout Roundtable on February 4th. These ideas included a GPS activity, orienteering from one lake to the other, estimate of distances (1st class), food competition, weekend backpacking / orienteering advanced program, and others.

The group is awaiting the naming of a District Camping Chair who will coordinate the remaining activities. This Chair should be in place by Feb 4th.
