Mid Tenn Flooding – A Call to Action

Submitted by on May 7, 2010 – 8:58 AMNo Comment

Dear UCD Scouting family, We hope this message finds you and your family well.  We wanted to share with you the effects of the flood on the Middle Tennessee Council.   First, our hearts pour out to the families and businesses that have been affected by the tragic events.  As for the BSA council properties, the only damage exists at Boxwell.  We have damage to a ranger’s residence, the Parnell Dining Hall, some minor damage to a couple of campsites and the Stahlman sewer plant.  We see no reason that we will not be ready for the thousands of campers planning to attend Summer Camp this year.

A CALL TO THE ACTION - The community needs our help!  Pleas support your local community with the necessary supplies (non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, clothing essentials) to help get them through the next few weeks & months.  The Middle Tennessee Council office in Green Hills is collecting these items for Davidson County.  We are working with Second Harvest to distribute those items.  We are open 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. / Monday through Friday.  Anyone can drop off items to us.

McGugin Oil would like to support the efforts of the Middle Tn Council Boy Scouts by providing 4 drop-off areas for donations from the Upper Cumberland community.

  • Burgess Falls SHELL—1090 South Willow Ave—Exit 286 off I-40
  • Monterey SHELL—509 East Stratton Ave—Exit 301 off I-40
  • Algood 111 SHELL—635 West Main St—Near McDonald’s/Wal-Mart
  • McGugin’s —55 North Washington Ave—Across from County Court Clerk Office

We are asking each Scouting unit to come together and collect as many supplies as possible.   The other eight Boy Scout councils in Southern Region are sending this same message to their Scouts and units.

Once TEMA and other governmental agencies give approval for clean-up efforts, we will organize our volunteers to assist.  We are proud of our Middle Tennessee communities and want them to know a Scout has been and always will be helpful.

PLEASE NOTE:

The agencies we are working with are requesting these items:

  • Mops
  • Sponges
  • Laundry Detergent (dry)
  • Dishwashing Detergent
  • Garbage Bags

Please try to sort like items with like items.   All items should be unopened.

Jeremy Belk
Upper Cumberland District Director
